Is Gentian Violet Safe for Infant Thrush?

As a mom it's natural you only want what's best for your baby. Many moms of babies with infant thrush go out of their way to find safe, natural cures for this yeast problem rather than opting for prescription drugs - which always have potentially serious side effects. However, is one of the most common home remedies for thrush, gentian violet, really safe?

I'd say the answer is a resounding "no." I've read a lot of well-meaning posts on the net by moms and even midwives recommending gentian violet for thrush, but if you even scratch the surface of this home remedy, you'll find that it's just not suited for babies. I've covered the surface in more detail in my article, "Gentian Violet for Infant Thrush - Is it Safe?"

Some of my main concerns relating to using gentian violet for infant thrush are:

*An article on MedicalNewsToday.com reported the FDA was cracking down on China imported seafood due the presence of 3 contaminants - including gentian violet, "a known carcinogen"
*at least one study linked use of gentian violet with increased risk for oral cancer over the long term
*gentian violet can cause painful mouth sores and ulcers - exactly what you're trying to cure

All in all, it just doesn't make sense. I feel a lot of people resort to gentian violet or other potentially harmful remedies or drugs simply out of frustration, now knowing that thrush can be cured quickly AND naturally - without side effects.
